, a nonbinary 19-year-old documentary-film student from Colorado, jumped through hoops to arrange the top surgery they have been thinking about since they started high school. They finally managed to schedule a late-March consultation date with a plastic surgeon who arranged to do the operation in early May, prior to the surgeon’s last day in the operating room before moving to California.

Even so, it’s still common parlance to classify these surgeries as “elective,” and that’s “dangerous” terminology, Hawn says. “They are medically necessary surgeries. They are essential to the well-being of many people. We have the numbers and research to show thatand can also create more physical safety for some of our most vulnerable population who can be targeted for violence.”
