Talks continue, but there's still no contract for restricted free-agent centre Shane Pinto, left.Church Brewing: where the customers are the congregation and the choir | SaltWireThe Ottawa Senators will spend 36 hours promoting togetherness once the final buzzer sounds Monday night in Halifax.
Both sides have reached a stalemate after discussions earlier this week and remains to be seen whether either will bend to try to get the 22-year-old Pinto signed to a deal to try to get him into camp in time to suit up for the club’s final exhibition game against the Montreal Canadiens Saturday. A report Saturday by Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman said the club offered Pinto’s camp a one-year deal worth $1 million this week. The belief is that offer likely came with the proviso that if all went well — which the Senators expect it will — the two sides would sit down in January to discuss an extension when the collective bargaining agreement allows it.
It’s not like this is new territory for Gross, who has had other clients go down the same road. He represented Toronto Maple Leafs winger William Nylander in 2018, when he didn’t sign until Dec. 1, and Leafs defenceman Rasmus Sandin didn’t get a new deal done until midway through camp. Having covered this team since opening night on Oct 8, 1992, I’ve learned that contract negotiations are a rollercoaster ride, especially where restricted free agents like Pinto are concerned.
Alfredsson missed the early part of the year, but eventually signed an extension part way through the season and, as they say, the rest is history.
