garrioch pinto

Barring a last-minute change of heart, there will be one pivotal player missing from this team activity as restricted free agent Shane Pinto remains unsigned with the clock ticking towards the season opener Oct. 11 against the Carolina Hurricanes on the road.

Pinto, who is skating near his home in Long Island, N.Y., scored 20 goals and had 35 points in 82 games last season and is viewed as a key piece to help provide depth at centre behind Josh Norris and Tim Stutzle. As Postmedia has reported since camp started Sept. 20, the two sides aren’t far apart. The belief is there was progress made on a two-year deal this week and if this going to get settled that’s where the term will likely land. The Senators don’t want to trade Pinto and he doesn’t want to go anywhere so they have common ground on that front.

You don’t have to be cap compliant until 24 hours before the season starts. Dorion can try to get this situation settled then determine how to make it all work financially with an assist from Steve Staois, the club’s new president of hockey operations and the rest of the staff. Some of us have been around long enough to remember the time Hall of Fame winger Daniel Alfredsson was so frustrated in talks with then-GM Pierre Gauthier, the former captain asked for a trade during the off-season in 1997.Article content
