Ottawa Senators' Josh Norris during first day of training camp.Josh Norris took a step in the right direction on the road to recovery.
Whether he’ll suit up Friday against the Winnipeg Jets at home remains to be seen, but the decision by the medical staff to allow Norris to take contact is a sign that his recovery from the minor ailment he suffered is headed in the right direction. Norris was able to participate in all the drills while wearing the non-contact jersey and was trying to take a few bumps along the way. This move means he’s close to suiting up for a pre-season game and that’s important with the start of the season set for Oct. 11 against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Depth in the middle was supposed to be one of the strengths of the Senators heading into camp, but Norris not being cleared for contact and the absence of restricted free agent Shane Pinto have made it a challenge for Smith to determine where everybody will fit this season. If Pinto signs and Norris is healthy, then Jarventie and Greig will start the year with the club’s AHL affiliate in Belleville. But that just means they’ll be a phone call away and Smith noted that, at the very least, they can put themselves in the position to be called up in case of injury.
