\u0022The process could now stretch into March before we know who the owner will be.\u0022
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters at the board of governors meetings earlier this month that New York-based sports banker Galatioto Sports Partners would open the website with the financials “soon” but that likely won’t happen until early January.
Allowing potential bidders to look at the financials, which will include the club’s memorandum of understanding with the National Capital Commission for a new rink at LeBreton Flats, will give anyone interested in buying the team a good idea of what they want to bid. Once that happens, we’re told Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly will play a huge role with GSP and the Melnyk family to determine new owner. The NHL doesn’t want any issues if there’s an unexpected surprise and the owner has to write a cheque to cover financial issues. We’ve been told Jeffrey and Michael Kimel, Toronto real estate billionaires who were part owners of the Pittsburgh Penguins, should be considered a frontrunner.
Paul and Michael Paletta of Alinea Group Holdings have confirmed to this newspaper through a spokesperson they’re considering a bid. We believe Tullio and Alinea have partnered up with Andlauer to help strengthen his bid.
