One small step for the Ottawa Senators, one giant step for Anton Forsberg. The Senators’ veteran goaltender hadn’t suited up for an NHL game in 225 ...
The Toronto Maple Leafs' Max Domi is unable to get a clean shot on the Ottawa Senators' Anton Forsberg during third period in preseason NHL hockey action in Ottawa, on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023.
“It’s been a long road and there was a lot of emotion coming out there for the national anthem,” said Forsberg, who made some key stops down the stretch to secure the win for the Senators. “I’m so happy and grateful that I’m back, and I feel good. I’m just going to enjoy it.” “The mental toughness you have to have, we know what kind of a person he is and how hard he trains off the ice. You just see him with injuries to both knees and it’s a credit to him for the work that he did in the summer and with the trainers,” associate coach Jack Capuano said following the win.
The club is scheduled to start Mads Sogaard on Monday night in the rematch in Toronto and newcomer Joonas Korpisalo will make his debut Wednesday at the Bell Centre in Montreal. From there, a determination will be made on how to proceed in the final five exhibition games. “I felt like there was a lot of scrambling for myself in the first two periods,” said Forsberg. “I was trying to find my game and I calmed down a little bit in the third. It felt better the longer it went.”
