The Senators’ veteran goaltender hadn’t suited up for an NHL game in 225 days so Sunday afternoon’s 36-save effort in a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Canadian Tire Centre was a perfect start to the preseason for Forsberg. The last time we saw Forsberg leaving the ice in Ottawa, he was being taken off by a stretcher on Feb.
We’ve seen players tear one MCL, but it’s rare for anyone to tear both at the same time. The first order of business was to get the strength back in his legs, and near the end of last season he went on the ice in full equipment just to see how he felt. “It gives him confidence to come back and go through a game like that. He got tested in this game. He seemed to battle and recover too.”
For 20 minutes, Forsberg had the best seat in the house. Ottawa pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the first and outshot the Leafs 24-7. Toronto started to turn up the heat in the second and on the 10th shot of the period the puck found its way through Forsberg to get the the Leafs on the board. Signed to a five-year, $20 million deal on July 1, Korpisalo is expected to lead the way to form a tandem with Forsberg. Goaltending was the club’s Achilles heel last season because the Senators couldn’t keep anybody healthy, and the organization used a franchise-record seven goalies.
