Fringe review: Schtick runs thin while honesty holds true yyc yycarts

If these are your expectations, rest assured the artists at the 2022 Calgary Fringe Festival are certainly not going to disappoint.

What Wade really wants to share are his feelings of inadequacy that began at an early age. He insists he’s never understood the whole concept of loving and being loved. When he was five, he wouldn’t sing the word love in any of the hymns at church because it meant nothing to him and that hesitation has played a major role in all his relationships with women, so he says, and the way he says it sounds as truthful as it is painful.

The truly remarkable thing about The Most Honest Man in the World is the character that Wade creates is so real, that it’s easy to forget he is as skilled an actor as he is a writer. This is the kind of schtick Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence used to do on the Carol Burnett Show and the antics that fuel the Saturday Night Live skits each week. It’s extremely effective in small doses but look what happened when SNL spun its characters into such movies as MacGruber, Coneheads, It’s Pat and A Night at the Roxbury. The joke, as good as it was, fizzled out.Article content
