Chrystia Freeland, former finance minister, officially launches her bid to become the next leader of the Liberal party. She faces competition from Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada, as the race to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau heats up.
Chrystia Freeland , less than five weeks after resigning from her cabinet position due to a dispute with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau , has officially launched her campaign to succeed him as the leader of the Liberal party. In a concise statement shared on social media Friday morning, Freeland announced her campaign launch for Sunday. 'I'm running to fight for Canada,' she stated.
Freeland's candidacy pits her against former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who held a public campaign launch in Edmonton Thursday afternoon. They currently stand as the most prominent contenders in the race, but the field is anticipated to expand in the coming days. Government House leader Karina Gould is expected to enter the fray soon, along with Ottawa MP Chandra Arya and former Montreal MP Frank Baylis. Aspiring candidates have a limited window of opportunity, with less than a week remaining to make a decision about entering the race, which will culminate on March 9th. To secure a place on the ballot, they must submit an initial payment of $50,000 immediately, followed by the remaining $300,000 of the $350,000 entrance fee by mid-February. Freeland's resignation from cabinet on December 16th followed Trudeau's announcement to replace her with Carney as finance minister. The subsequent criticism surrounding her departure prompted Trudeau to declare his intention to step down as soon as a new leader is elected.Interestingly, Carney never assumed the finance portfolio, with Dominic LeBlanc sworn in as finance minister hours after Freeland's resignation. Notably, Freeland played a pivotal role in Canada's response to U.S. tariff threats prior to her resignation as finance minister. As she campaigns, she is emphasizing the importance of standing up to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's threats to impose 25% tariffs on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico. During Trump's first term, Freeland was instrumental in responding to his tariffs. As foreign affairs minister, she oversaw a retaliatory dollar-for-dollar tariff response to Trump's imposition of import taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum in 2018. Her campaign has indicated that she aims to implement a similar strategy of dollar-for-dollar retaliation against any future tariffs imposed by the U.S. A number of Liberal MPs have already pledged their support to either Freeland or Carney. Former cabinet minister Marie-Claude Bibeau expressed her backing for Freeland shortly after her campaign announcement, praising her ability to stand up to President Trump and defend the interests of Quebec's regions. Other notable supporters of Freeland include Health Minister Mark Holland, former cabinet minister Randy Boissonnault, and Liberal MPs Ben Carr, Ken McDonald, Stéphane Lauzon, Rob Oliphant, and Anthony Housefather, as well as former longtime Liberal MP Wayne Easter. Housefather highlighted his confidence in Freeland's ability to manage Canada's relationship with the United States. He also encouraged other candidates to reconsider the Liberal government's planned changes to the capital gains inclusion rate, a policy proposed in the last federal budget under Freeland's tenure as finance minister
