Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland officially declared her candidacy to lead the Liberal Party and succeed Justin Trudeau as prime minister. Freeland faces the challenge of distancing herself from Trudeau's unpopularity while competing with Mark Carney and other candidates to win over voters.

Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland , former minister of finance and deputy prime minister, leaves after attending a meeting of the Liberal caucus in Ottawa on Jan. 8.Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland made it official Friday, saying she will run to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister and Liberal Party leader.

This presents more of a problem for Ms. Freeland, who was Mr. Trudeau’s deputy prime minister for the past six years and finance minister since 2020. Already, she has moved away from Mr. Trudeau. Sources in her campaign are saying she will renounce the capital gains tax she introduced in her April budget, and scrap the unpopular consumer carbon pricing regime, if elected Liberal leader on March 9.

Mr. Nanos said it’s much easier for Mr. Carney to criticize the Trudeau’s government’s economic policies and walk back carbon pricing because “he can at least say I was not at the table. I did not vote and I was not part of that government.” Mr. Housefather released a statement on X saying he is confident that Ms. Freeland can steer the Liberal Party back to the political centre and that she is capable of handling Canada-U.S. relations.
