RALEIGH — Eric Staal signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday to retire as a member of the NHL franchise. The team also announced it will retire their former captain's No. 12 jersey sometime this season.

He won the Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006, leading the team in playoff scoring with 28 points . “From the time I arrived in Raleigh at 18 years old and throughout my 12 years there, I felt the love and support of the fans and organization in a way that will always feel special to me."
