Former central banker Mark Carney made his bid to become the country’s next prime minister official on Thursday, launching his Liberal leadership race by pitching himself as an outsider and an unconventional politician who can fix a system that is not working for ordinary Canadians.
“I’m here to earn your trust to lead that fight. I’m back home in Edmonton, to declare my candidacy for leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada.” Mr. Carney will face off against former deputy prime minister and finance minister Chrystia Freeland and Government House Leader Karina Gould. Both are expected to make their own leadership bids official in the next three days.Also planning campaigns are Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste, Ontario MP Chandra Arya and former Quebec MP Frank Baylis.
He is the chair of Brookfield Asset Management, which manages more than $1-trillion in assets, and sits on numerous boards of directors including Bloomberg LP and Stripe, a financial services firm. The most recent December effort to recruit him spelled the beginning of the end of Mr. Trudeau’s tenure after Ms. Freeland quit in a public rebuke of the Prime Minister rather than wait to be demoted by him to make way for Mr. Carney.
