Ford targets younger buyers with the cleverly designed, Kuga-based Maverick compact pick-up for the North American market. First drive review:
’s Tucson-based Santa Cruz and marks a rejuvenation of the long-dormant compact pick-up truck segment. Ford is targeting “people who never knew they wanted a truck” but it will also find favour with young, city-dwelling truck lovers who want something smaller and less thirsty than the alternatives.
The square theme continues inside, where the dashboard design is fresh and distinctive and the infotainment bang up to date, in marked contrast to the Ranger’s aging cabin. Clever touches include hollowing out the door liners to enable tablet storage and cutting the door pulls short to accommodate a one-litre water bottle.
On the road, the driver’s view is good to the front and sides, but rearward visibility is impeded by the sliding rear window. We’d guess that a Maverick with standard tyres and suspension would be more comfortable on city streets than our FX4-equipped test truck with its Falken Wildpeak all-terrain rubber and off-road-tuned suspension.
