We are fortunate to live in a country with abundant natural resources, and a highly productive agriculture sector that plays a major role in the Canadian economy. In 2022, the whole agriculture and agri-food system in Canada employed over two million people and generated approximately seven per cent of Canada's gross domestic product . Every day, we hear about food security concerns and the need to feed a growing world population sustainably.

Canadians must hold their government and employers to account on worker protections, but this must be grounded in the facts. The negative image of the program often found in the media does not align with the positive experience most workers have, with many now returning to the same farms for years, if not decades. While some may question why these workers don’t just move to Canada, much of this work is seasonal.
compliance data also paints a clear picture that the vast majority of Canadian farm employers are abiding by the program’s worker protections and the range of other occupational health and safety requirements they face on-farm. To be clear, we unequivocally condemn those who do not take worker protection seriously. However, those bad actors are certainly not in the majority and represent a very small proportion of the Canadian agriculture sector.
