Flames fan favourite Mikael Backlund is up for an award that recognizes “a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”

Backlund, Lee and Nurse were selected as finalists from a slate of 32 team nominees. The winner will receive a $25,000 donation to direct to a charity or initiative of their choice, while the two others will be able to earmark $5,000 for a worthy cause. Backlund, a fixture on the Flames’ roster for the past 14 seasons, has long been determined to be a difference-maker away from the rink.
The 34-year-old and his wife Frida have been strong supporters of the ALS Society of Alberta, responsible for raising over $400,000 for that non-profit. The fan-favourite forward is also an ambassador for Kids Cancer Care and Special Olympics Calgary — to date, he has invited over 500 people to attend games at the Saddledome through these two programs — and most recently launched a program in partnership with Parachutes for Pets that helps to ensure that children in foster care are not separated from their four-legged friends.Article content
