A fire that destroyed a six-storey condo building that was under construction in Saanich roughly six months ago is not considered suspicious, according to Saanich Police. The fire occurred just after 12:30 a.
m. on Nov. 20, 2024 at the corner of Quadra Street and Palmer Road, where Abstract Development’s “Cadence” development was under construction. No one was injured in the fire, but the blaze shut down the 2800 block of Quadra Street for more than 24 hours and left nearby cars damaged and neighbours worried. Cars parked across the street from the fire on Palmer Road had melted grills, headlight casings and side mirrors. The windshield of one truck had bubbled and broken from the extreme heat. The fire is shown on the morning of Nov. 20, 2024. In an update on April 29, Saanich Police said after a thorough investigation, officers have “deemed the fire not suspicious.”Loren Pearson lived several houses away from the fire, and came outside that night after hearing an explosion and seeing an orange glow.“I’ve never seen a fire this big. I’m about five houses down and when I was in my driveway taking video the heat was unbelievable,” he said. Firefighters from both Saanich and Victoria responded to the blaze, which continued to smoulder for hours after it was put out. “Confronted with an extremely challenging situation under difficult conditions, our firefighters, along with those from the Victoria Fire Department, performed admirably to contain the fire and prevent further damage to adjacent buildings,” said Saanich Fire Chief Michael Kaye at the time. The condo development was set to be six storeys tall and contain 77 units, with construction about 90 per cent complete at the time of the fire. In November, Abstract Developments told CHEK News that it was still trying to plan its next steps, but that it was grateful that no one was injured in the blaze. “We’ve been in touch with purchasers and we will be in touch with them often over the next coming days,” said Abstract Developments director of marketing and communications Owen Rennison on the day of the blaze. “We’re doing everything we can to be as upfront with our purchasers as possible,” he said at the time.
