Despite some potentially comic situations, the film leans into drama and does it well

Donkeyhead

, a play on a Punjabi word parents use on children who misbehave. But when I saw the synopsis – Darshi’s thirtysomething character is spinning her wheels while pursuing a married man – something put me in mind of the recent comedyMona has been a model daughter, looking after her elderly father, Gurinder , but also using that role as an excuse not to move forward in her own life. A promising writer, she’s been stalled on that front for ages.

When Gurinder takes a turn for the worse, Mona calls her siblings in London, Toronto and New York. They include her twin brother Parm , sister Sandy and brother Rup . All seem to be doing much better than her, although some of that turns out be just brave-facing the world. Mona’s own worldview gets a knock when she learns that her father has made her twin, not her, executor to his will. And the lawyer she consults on the matter is also the man she’s sleeping with.Donkeyhead

is not a ribald laughfest but a thoughtful examination of immigrant experiences and filial expectations – a little goofiness perhaps, but if you come for the comedy, stay for the drama.3 stars out of 5
