Brian D. Hayden draws upon rich body of information acquired over his long career to flesh out this, his first work of fiction.

“Write what you know,” is the wisdom often offered to tyro authors.

In The Eyes of the Leopard, his recently published novel for young readers, he draws upon the rich body of information he has acquired over a long career as an archeologist conducting studies on four continents to flesh out this, his first work of fiction. Sev, the novel’s young protagonist, belongs to a clan of such hunters. In the act that drives the book’s action, he enters a forbidden and painted sacred cave. When his transgression is revealed by one of his enemies and he is falsely accused of killing a clan member, Sev is compelled to undergo a potentially lethal initiation ceremony and seek a vision of a spirit guide.

Hayden, whose academic work has explored the role of ritual feasting and of secret societies in the development of hierarchy in Stone Age communities, particularly in his 2018 book The Power of Ritual in Prehistory: Secret Societies and Origins of Social Complexity, draws upon his impressive erudition to bring these elements of human development into vivid life for the reader.Article content
