Futuristic tale of a couple, their daughter and her robot brother examines what it means to be human
, a low-key science-fiction drama that premiered at the Sundance film festival this year, where it won the Alfred P. Sloan prize for best science-themed film. Set in the near future, it stars Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith as Jake and Kyra, a couple who have adopted from China a little girl named Mika .
That is, until Yang suddenly stops working. Jake takes him to a shop – like after-market smartphone repair, the options are sketchy and often expensive. The technician finds a chip inside Yang that he’s convinced is some sort of spyware – again, shades of smartphone worries – but Jake learns it’s actually a simple memory chip, on which Yang could store a few seconds from every day of his life.
