“This will be my first Growing Room Festival, and I’m so excited to be part of such a diverse lineup of feminist, marginalized voices,” says the Vancouverite. “I think Growing Room reflects the changing landscape of CanLit, and it’s pushing boundaries by inviting writers whose voices aren’t typically showcased at festivals. We’re going to be getting to hear unique voices that are bold, dynamic and dare to defy the mainstream.
“It pretty much started out of the necessity to create space for writers and also introduce all this new kind of storytelling to the world. So we’re really looking now at how we are shaping the way we tell stories and opening that up,” says festival director Chelene Knight, who is a poet, author and editor of Room magazine. “It’s really exciting to see.
“The biggest chunks of feedback I got was: ‘Oh, my God, I cannot believe this is a literary festival. This completely blew my expectations out of the water.’ That’s what we want to do. We want to say ‘Hey, this is for everybody. You don’t have to be some literary all-star to attend. This is for everybody. Bring your kids if you want.”
On the other side of that, Wong admits a festival like this gives her a chance to be a bit of fan girl herself. She says she is thrilled to have the chance to rub shoulders and share thoughts and ideas with other writers like Ivan Coyote, Lucas Crawford, Molly Cross-Blanchard, Jo Dworkshack, Eden Robinson, Hana Shafi, Meghan Bell, Triny Finlay, Shazia Hafiz Ramji and Lydia Kwa.
“People are going to gravitate towards Lindsay. Her memoir had so much success. We wanted to bring some youth as well and I know a lot of the younger writers are all about that book as well.”
