The feminist literary festival is dedicated to “art as inspiration, comedy and feminist humour, futurisms, podcasting, inclusive storytelling and survival in the face of systemic abuse.”
1. It’s growing. Now in its third year, the 2019 Growing Room Literary Festival features over 100 writers in 40-plus events, including workshops, manuscript consultations, panels, and readings.
2. International Women’s Day. The literary festival kicks off on International Women’s Day with an opening night party featuring First Nations burlesque troupe Virago Nation and DJ Kookum. 3. Book launch. As part of the festival, Growing Room will host the launch of Whatever Gets You Through: Twelve Survivors on Life after Sexual Assault. The essay collection offers long-form discussions of sexual assault and healing through topics such as ice hockey, kink, boxing, and tapestry-making.
4. Behind Every Microphone, There Is a Great Woman: Podcasting and Feminism. Moderator Jocelyn Tennant discusses podcasting with Vancouver-based Dina Del Bucchia , Mica Lemiski , Hannah McGregor , and Dawson Creek’s Samantha Nock . 5. Keynote. On the final day of the festival, Canisia Lubrin will deliver the keynote address. Born and raised in St. Lucia, the Ontario-based writer is the author of Voodoo Hypothesis, a poetry collection, and has worked as a community advocate.
