A fatal dog attack in Brantford , Ontario, has led to the seizure of a dog and charges against its owner. A 16-year-old Chihuahua named Charlie was out for a walk last week when a confrontation with another dog resulted in his death. The incident sparked an investigation by bylaw officers who initially struggled to identify the owner and dog involved.
Despite numerous emails and phone calls, investigators were unable to locate the dog, suspecting it may have been deliberately removed from the city after the attack. The City of Brantford released security footage online, hoping to identify the suspect dog and its owner. The footage showed a young girl walking the dog, but she was later confirmed to be a dog walker and not the owner. The real owner was eventually identified and located. The dog, described as matching the characteristics of a dog involved in a fatal attack in the summer of 2024, was found back at the residence believed to be the suspect owner's. Armed with a search warrant, bylaw officers and Brantford Police seized the dog from the apartment. The investigation revealed that the dog may have been involved in two fatal dog-on-dog attacks. Facing charges, including lack of a dog license, the owner will appear in court. Officials are also seeking to have the dog tested for DNA to confirm if it is an American pit bull, a breed they strongly suspect. The dog is currently being held at a kennel pending a court decision on its fate
