Four teenage girls are facing trial in Ontario after pleading guilty to lesser charges in connection with the fatal stabbing of a homeless man in December 2022.
Lawyers began what is anticipated to be a multi-day legal proceeding on Monday in the case of four teenage girls scheduled to stand trial this year in connection with their alleged involvement in a fatal group assault on a homeless man in Toronto. The girls are part of a group that police allege descended upon and stabbed Kenneth Lee, a 59-year-old man residing in the city's shelter system, in December 2022.
Following Lee's death, eight girls, ranging in age from 13 to 16, were apprehended within hours. All were initially charged with second-degree murder, and subsequently, four have entered guilty pleas to lesser charges of manslaughter or assault. A judge-only trial is slated for this month for two of the remaining girls on charges of second-degree murder. The other two are set to face trial before a judge and jury in May, one for second-degree murder and the other for manslaughter. Originally, all four girls were slated to have their case decided by a jury; however, two recently transitioned to a judge-alone trial after the Crown and judge approved a request from their legal representation. Due to scheduling constraints, the cases have been bifurcated into two separate trials. Pursuant to their underage status, none of the accused can be publicly identified. Furthermore, a publication ban prohibits the disclosure of any evidence or arguments presented during this week's hearings. Legal submissions are anticipated to continue throughout the week.
