Carter Naugler is training to be a world-class sprint kayak competitor, and his hard work and dedication is already paying off.
Earlier this year, he competed at the Canada Games trials and made Team Nova Scotia’s under-18 squad for men's kayak. That provided him with additional training and travel opportunities.“It was a pretty big success,” said Naugler.
As part of the under-18 men’s 4K team, Naugler helped the group, which featured Devin Joy, Braden Lawrence and Eli Nowlan, win the gold. “He’s really starting to come into a better understanding of what is required if he wants to start making national team level events."When he’s in school, a typical training day would consist of leaving home by 5 a.m., practising in HRM from 6-7:15 a.m., heading to Avon View High School in Windsor, and then leaving school by 3:15 p.m. to make the 4-6 p.m. practice. This routine happens four times a week, with practice also on Saturdays from 8-11 a.m.
Naugler used to also play hockey but he said he gave that up this past winter to solely focus on sprint kayak. And that renewed focus is paying off. “He’s shown himself and shown everyone else that he’s one of the top in the country. I think now that he’s got that confidence under his belt, he’s starting to realize he can go for more than he initially thought he could,” said Kerrivan.
