Two Ontario men have been arrested for targeting unsuspecting individuals at universities and shopping centers in British Columbia's Lower Mainland with a fake taxi scam.
Metro Vancouver Transit Police have announced the arrest of two men from Ontario in connection with a sophisticated fake taxi scam targeting individuals at universities and shopping centers throughout British Columbia's Lower Mainland. According to a press release issued by the police, the scam unfolds with one of the suspects impersonating a taxi passenger and soliciting assistance from unsuspecting bystanders in covering the fare.
Police explain that once victims agree to help and provide their debit or credit cards, the perpetrators engage in a deceitful exchange, swapping out the original cards. In some instances, the fraudsters subsequently utilize these stolen cards for unauthorized purchases. Transit Police investigators became alerted to the suspicious activity on December 6th when officers observed a black Hyundai Elantra with a prominent yellow taxi sign mounted on its roof. Believing the vehicle to be involved in the fake taxi scam, officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the driver, attempting to evade capture, rammed into an unmarked Transit Police vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a trove of incriminating evidence, including 29 debit and credit cards, a portable debit card payment machine, and a magnetic taxi sign. The recovered evidence, coupled with the details of the incident, has led investigators to recommend charges against the two suspects to the British Columbia Prosecution Service
