Abborsford’s Ryan Kremsater picks up where his mentor Kris Holm left off: Mastering the North Shore’s bike trails in the name of one-wheel extreme riding
Don’t rub your eyes, that really was a rider on one wheel bouncing and careening down a North Shore trail near you.“When people hear I’m a mountain unicyclist, a lot of people don’t really know what to think,” 27-year-old Ryan Kremsater said during a couple of hours of demonstration on the trails near Braemar Park in North Vancouver.
“It’s a completely different style of riding. We take the trail one way, they take the trail another way. You get your adrenalin and kicks in a different way.” And mountain unicycling, he says. You can trace that back to extreme-unicycling pioneer and B.C. native Holm, who was the first rider to reach mainstream audiences through film festivals, TV , and magazine articles in the late 1990s and 2000s.“Kris Holm is widely known as one of the most influential mountain unicyclists, so in a way you could also say the North Shore is the birthplace of free-ride mountain unicycling,” Kremsater said.
“So, I thought this combination of cycling and balancing was cool and told my mom I wanted a unicycle for my birthday.”“I remember spending my entire 12th birthday, literally the entire day, in my driveway, struggling back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.” “But when you manage to balance your body on a thing that’s touching the ground on less than a square inch and can throw you off into any direction if you aren’t 100-per-cent focused, when you manage to ride on that thing over a technical trail, it is a very satisfying feeling.
From the hallway, after practising for a half-hour a day for a couple of weeks, he graduated to the driveway, then to the sidewalk.
