Marine life experts say they were surprised to spot a new Southern Resident orca baby, likely born within the past week, in waters east of Vancouver Island.
According to the Friday Harbour, Wash., based Centre for Whale Research , the latest encounter is good news, considering the killer whales, which have a population of around 75, are listed inThe excitement started building as staff received a report earlier that afternoon of a young orca calf, since classified as L128, heading north off Lime Kiln, which is on the west side of San Juan Island.
The sighting came after staff heard all three pods — K, J and L — on the Haro Strait hydrophones Saturday night, prompting them to get up early the next morning and scan west San Juan Island, from north to south, without any luck. On Monday, the CWR posted on social media that the calf was “VERY new” and “tiny” with “very clear” fetal folds. “Our best guess is that it was born within the last three days.”This is rare, though “not totally without precedent,” for new moms to “take some space away from the rest of the group or for a single matriline, even a small one, to be in inland waters alone,” the
“We were fortunate to find them again in Haro Strait and still on their own,” Weiss said, adding that survey photos and aerial observation footage shared on the CWR Facebook page were taken from an appropriate distance.
