New fires will start easily, spread rapidly, and challenge fire suppression efforts,” said Sam Bellion, Coastal Fire information officer.
Two wildfires are currently burning on the Island, but both are under control. The Coastal Fire Centre says they were human-caused fires., almost all of our starts are suspected to be human-caused,” said Bellion. “As the hot weather continues and thedanger rating increases, we want to make sure we’re devoting our resources to the lightning-caused wildfires, and not those human starts.
“We saw thunderstorms track across the province and impact the Kamloops Fire Centre, the Interior, as well as the Southeast Fire Centre. We’re seeing new lightning-caused starts burning in both of those centres,” said Emelie Peacock, fire information officer. Lightning has caused nearly 90 per cent of all fires this season, which is a trend that has provided some good news for wildfire crews.
“We actually had seen in the spring a reduction in human-cause starts compared to previous years, that’s really, really promising,” said Bellion., low levels of fine particular matter are expected to roll in with smoky skies into Vancouver Island early Sunday morning. The smoke is originating from both southern B.C. and Washington State.“We were a little bit surprised about that, about whether there would be smoke,” said meteorologist Philippe-Alain Bergeron.
