CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Abdullah Balal, who lives in Ontario, has been closely watching the protest by foreign workers in P.E.I. over the past month.
So, consultants need to be aware of any changes to advise their clients, Balal said, referring to a recent situation in Manitoba. The protesters, most of whom work in this sector, say the sudden policy change left them blindsided as they likely won’t be nominated for permanent residency. Meanwhile, their work permits are expiring, and they will soon have to leave Canada.
Balal said many international students often come to Canada under false promises from unauthorized, unlicensed immigration consultants who claim they can easily transition from being a student to a permanent resident. However, this is not true. Canada has seen large increases in immigration in recent years leading to unprecedented population growth. The country’s population grew by 3.2 per cent to about 40.7 million on Jan. 1 compared with 2023 – the highest annual population growth rate since 1957, according to a recent Statistics Canada report.
