We know this is not a uniquely Australian problem. Globally, the market power of Facebook and Google, with their sophisticated ad tech and vast scale, has been disrupting and decimating local media for at least a decade. We have all witnessed the shedding of audiences and newsroom jobs and the loss of advertising revenue at an alarming rate.
It did not break the internet, and it showed that it is possible to curtail the market dominance of the platforms.
