As the school year winds down, the push to solve the teacher shortage across Pennsylvania is still ongoing.Students, parents, lawmakers and superintendents headed to Harrisburg on Tuesday to rally for a solution to the teacher shortage crisis and advocate for more funds for the student-teacher stipend program.Over the past decade, the number of certified teachers produced by Pennsylvania education programs has fallen by 75%. The turnover rate is at an all-time high.
8% of rural schools struggle to fill teacher vacancies. On average, 7.7% of white teachers left their school, while rates for teachers of color are even higher.'We need to get the support teachers need to fix this teacher shortage because that is such a major problem in education. It doesn't only affect us who are entering the workforce. It also affects every child who is in a school,' said Maggie Shatzer, a student-teacher at Shippensburg University.
