Educators and lawmakers came together at Millersville University in search of solutions to the teacher shortage in Pennsylvania.'When I say teacher shortage crisis, I don't use that word crisis lightly,' said Laura Boyce, with PA Needs Teachers.Boyce said the number of teaching certifications dropped 70% in the past decade – from more than 17,000 to just over 5,000.Penn Manor Superintendent Phil Gale said it's becoming tougher to fill openings.
Keith Miles, the superintendent of the School District of Lancaster, faces similar challenges.'We normally would get about 30 applicants for a position. Now it's about three. So, we recognize that we have to be more creative in how we recruit,' he said.The legislature recently approved a student-teacher stipend program, which saw 4,500 applicants in the first 48 hours.
