If Dyck and Heward belong to another time, you’d never know it by the job they’ve done in their first year with the Vancouver Giants.

There are times Michael Dyck and Jamie Heward try to educate their young charges on the Vancouver Giants about the way things used to be. Then they realize, why bother? When he was 17, for example, Dyck went to a training camp in Lethbridge that, against all odds, didn’t produce a single fight over the first two days. This didn’t sit well with John Chapman, the Lethbridge coach and GM, who favoured a more primal approach to the game.

But if Dyck and Heward belong to another time, you’d never know it by the job they’ve done in their first year with the Giants. “I don’t want Mike to get painted as an old-school guy. He’s not old-school at all. He’s very open to new technology and new developments in the game.” Toigo tried to hire Dyck on two other occasions but the old defenceman was working as a commodity trader while helping coach his son Carson’s youth teams in Lethbridge. He started with his son in atom and worked with the same group — that included Giants’ star Bowen Byram — all the way to midget.

Dyck and Heward had actually grown apart before Swift Current drafted Carson a couple of years ago. It didn’t take long to resume their friendship.
