A Nanaimo man in his 60s is facing charges after crashing his SUV into a BC Hydro pole while allegedly driving under the influence. The crash, which occurred on Monday night, caused significant damage to the vehicle and nearly severed the pole in two. While the driver suffered minor injuries, he was issued a 90-day driving ban and his vehicle was towed. RCMP are urging the public to avoid impaired driving, highlighting the dangers and consequences.

The Nanaimo RCMP says an alleged drunk driver is lucky to be up and walking after he drove his SUV into the side of a BC Hydro pole on Monday night.

The crash crumpled the front of the man’s vehicle, while the force of the collision “nearly sheared the pole in two,” according to RCMP.Paramedics looked over the man, who is in his 60s, and while he suffered some minor injuries, he was otherwise medically cleared, according to RCMP. The man failed the breath tests, according to RCMP, and he was issued a 90-day roadside driving ban. His vehicle was also towed from the scene.

Mounties are also urging people to avoid impaired driving, with the BC Highway Patrol adding that 19 impaired drivers were caught at road stops on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day across Vancouver Island., an average of 61 people die in impaired driving crashes each year in British Columbia, and just over one-in-five fatal crashes involve impaired driving.
