Downtown business owners are breathing a collective sigh of relief following the federal government’s decision to order civil servants back to their desks for two or three days a week.

Steve Chandler, general manager of Nate’s Deli on Sparks Street, said business has slowly but steadily improved since government workers started trickling back to the office earlier this year. “I’m counting on people coming back to work now because I have no residential clientele,” Chandler said Friday.Article content

Treasury Board president and Ottawa-Vanier MP Mona Fortier said the move is designed to bring “fairness and equity” to the federal workplace since some departments have their employees in the office regularly, and others do not. Some departments have also left it to individual managers to decide when employees can work from home.

“I can’t say if the federal government has gone far enough, but to be honest, I’m just glad they’ve done something,” she said.
