A Blackburn builder was spared jail over unsafe practices which saw bricks knocked onto a street and workers left at risk by an open shaft and exposed asbestos.

Mohammed Shafiq was given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay almost £10,000 after admitting a host of health and safety breaches. Preston Crown Court heard that Shafiq bought a former warehouse in Manner Sutton Street and planned to convert in into smaller work units.

Workers were dry sweeping construction dust and debris possibly containing carcinogenic asbestos dusts without any respiratory protective equipment or suitable personal protective equipment. None of them had been provided with any training in asbestos awareness.
