Central Saanich and Westshore RCMP are opting out of teams dealing with domestic violence, at‑risk kids and mental health crisis.

Lawson says the money it would save from being a part of those units would be enough to possibly hire a new officer who can better address the needs specific to Central Saanich. By 2026, West Shore RCMP says it will re-invest its savings, around $350,000 annually, into creating its own units that mirror the ones the department is leaving, to better serve the seven West Shore communities it polices.Victoria’s Police Chief Del Manak is worried losing the financial contribution from other forces will force the units to fold.

“A perpetrator could commit an offense in one area then move onto another relationship in another area and commit another offense. And we’re concerned that there won’t be that sharing of information,” said Howard.
