The Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa. CONTRIBUTED PHOTODIGBY, NS – The Nova Scotia Community College and the Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa have teamed up to offer two-year hospitality business and culinary management courses onsite at the renowned historic resort.

“If the program is successful, we could have up to 100 students every year,” says Glenn Squires, president of the Digby Pines Ownership Group. “This partnership with NSCC is a proud moment for historic Digby Pines. We now have an important stake in the future of hospitality training in Nova Scotia,” says Squires. “This public/ private partnership is first-of-a-kind in Canada. As the Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa begins its next phase of development, hospitality, and eventually culinary students, will have the opportunity to be up close and personal with leading-edge hospitality growth. This is a game changer for all involved.

“We have a few off-site programs, like a music program that used to be in Shelburne and now is in Sydney, and of course some of the customized programs that we do, but this arrangement is the first," she says."It really is quite unique. We’re always looking for opportunities and we see this as a really unique opportunity – getting to work with a private group that has a particular need," she says. “Is it a model we can use in the future? Yes, we absolutely hope so.

Digby Mayor Ben Cleveland says the addition of NSCC-led hospitality and culinary training at the Pines adds many benefits to the town. “I’ve always promoted the NSCC and have always hoped they would expand their role in the community,” he says. Thompson says the NSCC community site in Digby attracts between 40 to 50 students each year, taking courses such as Continuing Care, Business and Office administration, or the outlearning program.
