Paul Gidney continues to be lifted by the support he receives in the sport of powerlifting, which this year has already taken him to a national stage and will bring him to a world stage as well. | SaltWire

Paul Gidney of Digby had a great showing in powerlifting at the Canadian nationals in February. CONTRIBUTEDDIGBY, NS – Paul Gidney continues to be lifted by the support he receives in the sport of powerlifting, which this year has already taken him to a national stage and will bring him to a world stage as well.

Gidney has a lot to be proud of in his powerlifting résumé. He’s held Canadian records in the M1 in the M2 classes. He deadlifted 296 kg in 2019 at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Newfoundland.“I deadlifted 276 kg at this year's Nationals as an M3, 105-kg lifter, in the 59 to 69 years old class. That deadlift was 35 kgs over the old record, and also an unofficial world record. You can only get world records at the Worlds.

“It was different this time, knowing it was the most weight ever deadlifted in my age and weight class in the IPF ,” he says. “I'm happy I did it because at the Worlds I will be more relaxed.” “I would like to thank God for my health. Lola and family and friends for their support. I would also like to thank Cooke Aquaculture for sponsoring me to help make this possible,” he says, adding he was thankful for the support he also received through messages of encouragement leading up to the Nationals and the messages that came afterward.
