Dick Hunter, who had three sons who played in the NHL and two who went on to operate the London Knights, died Tuesday at the age of 87

Richard Hunter, a father of six and dad to three NHLers – including four OHLers – and a longtime area hockey coach, died Tuesday at the age of 87. A private funeral will be held Friday with a celebration of life later in Alvinston, where he grew up.

“With the farm, we’re busy in the summer,” Dale, the Knights’ head coach, said. “Hockey was the natural thing to start playing because you’re not as busy in the winter. That was the vacation for him and Mom , taking us wherever we were going. We never went to Florida or nothing like that. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. There were rules, of course. Dick demanded the boys carry their own bags and stick or they couldn’t play.

Mark Hunter, the Knights GM, called Dick a very fair father. He didn’t play favourites and wanted to raise his boys to be men.“All kids get lazy and we all have to be accountable for what our actions are and what and how we do things,” Mark said. “It wasn’t just hockey. He wanted us to be accountable to teachers at school and the whole works. He wanted the best for us and, as a coach, the best for his players.

Mark flew home in the middle of the tournament so he could travel back with his dad out west to watch the final in person.
