Twenty substance-use treatment beds will be available to Indigenous youth age 12 to 18 in renovated space at the Orca Lelum Youth Wellness Centre

Indigenous youth in central Vancouver Island will be able to access a full-range of detox and treatment services at a youth facility in Lantzville this fall, Premier David Eby announced on Tuesday.

“Rooting treatment in addictions and mental heath issues in Indigenous knowledge has the power to transform a young person’s life,” said Eby. Services will be available starting in June and will be phased in as more staff are hired and trained, according to the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions, which said the centre is expected to operate at full capacity by fall.

Half the 20 beds will be reserved for short-term detox and stabilization, with the remaining beds allocated for a “10-week holistic, live-in and culture-based healing program,” it said.
