Author says we need to understand our emotional responses when it comes to making political decisions.

A quick scan of global headlines and it is clear as Donald Trump’s dog whistles that we are facing some pretty big challenges that require we make some good political decisions.

“The first thing is to accept that no one makes a perfect decision all the time,” added the political theorist who is currently a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa. “We are no more born to make good political decisions than we are born to hit a fastball.”

That last line is a key part of the whole thesis. The next step forward after we acknowledge we have emotional responses — that is just part of who we are — Moscrop says is to take some time to think about those responses. Moscrop is in essence pushing for more of a participatory democracy, something that most politicians don’t want to see happen. Think about it, what politician spends his or her life fighting to get power then happily turns around and gives it back to the citizenry?

“Sure,” Moscrop said he told the editor. “Suddenly I had this opportunity to take this research and put it to good public use.” Moscrop says the idea of forming citizen assemblies will encourage the development of civic capacity which is really important for not just making sure citizens get what they want from the governments they elect but to make sure they actually trust the process and respect the outcome of the election of the government.
