A truckload of Tesla cars arriving in Halifax on Tuesday. - Bill Spurr“I would suggest that this is the biggest technological shift in power train layout since the invention of automobiles. It is rapidly transforming the automotive industry,” says Don Jardine, academic chair for the School of Trades and Transportation at the Nova Scotia Community College.

Jardine said significant curriculum changes for the 90 automotive students at NSCC’s Akerley campus are in the works in response to “a pent-up need for technical training from the manufacturer’s side. If you look at the main manufacturers of automobiles across North America, they have been poised to move in this direction and COVID slowed them down from a training perspective,” he said, also taking note of the necessity of environmental sustainability.

“We sold it in August of ’21, we’d only been in business for less than a year and a half and Steele Auto Group saw what we were doing,” said Giles. “We were growing, we were ranked nationally, I was in the U.S. and Europe, we were being contacted from everywhere.” “This car probably weighs 4,600 pounds,” he said, gesturing to his own car, a Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor. “This is about 500 horsepower. It really goes, it’s crazy.”

It’s specialized, that’s why we have it, because people recognize Tesla as electric, but there are so many other models, like the Bolt, the Kona …there’s lots of options out there. The Ioniq 5 is the newest one.”
