Karl Dey, who says his ‘fatherly instincts kicked in’ when he heard a woman calling for help, has been awarded the Vancouver Police Department’s highest award for civilian bravery.

Karl Dey was delivering water to a Gastown shoe store when he saw a man grab a backpack and dash out the door.

“I was waiting maybe three minutes, when I heard someone scream, ‘Help!’” he recalled Friday. “I have a daughter, and I guess my fatherly instincts kicked in.” On Wednesday, Dey will pick up a certificate from the Vancouver Police Department recognizing his bravery and assistance with the pair of arrests on Dec. 11, 2017.

According to a description of the incident posted on the VPD website, Irfan Elahi and Joe De Jesus were working at the Bentall Street store when a man in camouflage entered and went straight to the firearms and hunting section. De Jesus, the manager of the section, quickly locked up a rifle he was working on.
