Witnesses described Wadea Al-Lala acting like a “robot” or a “zombie,” with “no expression whatsoever” throughout the brutal 2020 attack.

The defence plans to argue that Al-Lala was not criminally responsible at the time of the attack, Crown attorney Daniel De Santis told Corrick. He said the Crown also plans to get a second psychiatric assessment done on Al-Lala. A final decision in the case is not expected until later this year. Neighbour Michael Campbell testified he went out into the hallway after hearing Blandizzi screaming that she had been stabbed. He saw her standing near the elevators with a knife in her shoulder. Al-Lala had his arm around her, appearing to direct her back to her unit, he said.He said he recalled seeing Blandizzi about 30 to 45 minutes prior to the attack walking her dog in the park with a man who resembled Al-Lala, but couldn’t be sure.
Campbell was one of several neighbours to testify that Al-Lala did not respond to their pleas to stop.
