John Ridsdale was also ordered to pay $1,500 to the owner of the pitbull he shot, and must undergo anger management and violence counselling

On Thursday, Ridsdale — who came to national prominence for opposing a natural-gas pipeline in the region — faced criminal sanction in the outside judicial system.to a weapons charge and killing the dog — an act the owner says has left her traumatized — and as recommended jointly by the Crown and defence was placed on three years’ probation.

A local Indigenous court led by elders had asked the outside courts to handle the matter because they considered it “too politically sensitive,” said defence lawyer Michael Murphey. Ridsdale is among five hereditary chiefs fighting the Coastal GasLink pipeline, even though 20 elected band councils, including several Wet’suwet’en councils have signed agreements with the project. The traditional chiefs say 22,000 square-kilometres of the B.C. interior is under their jurisdiction and they don’t want the pipeline passing over part of it.

Soon after the shooting, Ridsdale called 911 and told the RCMP what he had done, willingly submitting to arrest when officers arrived. “I used to go for walks daily,” said the statement, read by the prosecutor as George stood next to her. “Now when I go out my anxiety goes through the roof. If I do go out and I have to go by his house, my heart races and I’m scared. But I act like I’m not scared because I don’t want to give him the satisfaction I’m feeling this way.”Article content
