UPDATE: Death toll from Iran's wave of unrest shot up to at least 17 but the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights claims at least 31 civilians were killed as popular anger flared over the death of Mahsa Amini
Iran's Revolutionary Guard called on the the judiciary to prosecute "those who spread false news and rumours" about Amini's death. In a statement, the Guard expressed sympathy with the family and relatives of Amini.
The incident unleashed huge anger in the population and the worst protests in Iran since 2019. Protests have spread to the capital and at least 50 cities and towns nationwide, with police using force to disperse protesters. “In accordance with a decision by officials, it has no longer been possible to access Instagram in Iran since yesterday evening and access to WhatsApp is also disrupted,” the semi-official Fars news agency reported.
