Massive government spending is crowding out private-sector investment

I have to say that watching the recent fiasco in the House of Commons with respect to the subtle shift in Mideast policy makes it embarrassing enough to be a Canadian, but the government’s mishandling of the economy and fiscal policy is beyond the pale — declining real per-capita incomes in Canada year in and year out.

It is why, under this current government’s watch, Mexico has replaced Canada as the top exporter to the U.S. — this happened two years ago. Historically, Canada exported around 20 per cent more to the U.S. than Mexico did; today, Mexico sells 10 per cent more to the U.S. than we do. That says everything we need to know about how current and past policies have failed us.

MONTREAL — Canada's population grew faster last year than it has at any time since the 1950s, amid a surge in the number of temporary residents, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday. The statistics agency says the population grew by 3.2 per cent in 2023, reaching 40,769,890 as of Jan. 1, 2024, the highest rate since 1957, when it grew 3.3 per cent.

UBS flagged on Thursday the downturn in commercial real estate markets as one of the "top and emerging risks" facing the Swiss bank, as higher borrowing costs and a post-pandemic slump in demand for office space hit the sector. Commercial property markets in the United States and Europe are in the grip of the biggest slowdown since the 2008-9 crash.
