Like groundhogs in February, soon will be emerging the candidates for council positions across this province. It is to be hoped that this latest effort to secure electoral success will represent a politics offering more than a place to accommodate personal ambitions.
That said, sharp policy differences are far too often taken as personal attacks by politicians who see their every motive and action as pure and beyond critical analysis. One may have had legitimate disagreements with Mayor McDougall-Merrill but, unlike her two immediate predecessors, she did not reach for projects beyond the grasp of municipal government, principally container port development.
Is it to be direct with funding and tax relief assistance or confined merely to the responsibilities outlined in the Municipal Government Act?This brings us to another point. Namely, the conduct of the next municipal campaign. Instead of the all too familiar media blitzes, all designed to favour the candidates with the best well-heeled financial backers, why not add something to the mix. Hold a series of open discussions among the mayoralty candidates throughout the CBRM.
