The Cowichan Valley Regional District has found a new spot to host an emergency weather shelter this winter, after concerns were raised about the previous emergency shelter being located at the Cowichan Community Centre last year.
The CVRD says it’s leasing the space between Nov. 15 and March 31, and that it will also pay for outreach and security staff for the site 24 hours a day “to mitigate any effect in the use pattern for the surrounding neighbourhood.” Last year, the CVRD says the emergency warming centre was activated 42 times during the winter season.
Parents and the Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey Association said they were concerned about the impacts of potential crime, open drug use and mental health issues close to kids who use the rec centre.Once the warming centre is activated this year, the CVRD estimates it will stay open for 12-hour periods overnight.
